How risky is a tummy tuck?

March 23rd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Cosmetic Surgery

Complications can be found in any surgical procedure, but tummy tuck is the riskiest of all cosmetic surgery. Pressure is put on the big veins in the lower body due to the belly being tightened. This can create the chance of blood clots in the legs. Deadly pulmonary embolisms have been known to cause death. Many doctors refuse to do multiple procedures along with a tummy tuck because of this risk. The less time spent in the operating room, the less chance for a problem.
The risk of bleeding is very high, and sometimes blood transfusions are required. As with all surgeries another risk is infection. With a tummy tuck an infection can spread all over the body and especially if laser liposuction was used. If infections occur, a hospital stay is required using intravenous drugs.
Seromas, pockets of serous fluid, are a common problem with tummy tucks. These are caused by small ruptured blood vessels and can be cleared up by draining with a fine needle.
Tummy tucks can cause temporary loss of feeling in the lower abdomen, and all patients lose some. It usually returns in several months. Patients who lose sensitivity in those areas must be careful to not burn their selves with a heating pad. Until the sensation returns, the skin is very susceptible to sunburn and frostbite. Smokers and diabetics are more prone to loss of sensation with this surgery.
Most tummy tucks are done in a hospital, and because of the seriousness of the surgery and risk of complications, patients generally spend one night. A significant amount of nursing care is required for those just undergoing the tummy tuck surgery. If you choose to have one, make sure you have a reliable adult who can help you as you recuperate.
